Mary Poppins Returns: Fashion Inspiration

The live action movie Mary Poppins Returns moves forward twenty years ahead from the original to 1935 with Emily Blunt as Mary. Designer Sandy Powell updated the look of Mary Poppins’ classic Victorian style to a more modern look with a nod to the original whimsical appeal with fitted jackets and fun patterns of stripes and polka dots.

The burgundy hat fedora from Nordstrom is a nod to Mary’s side tilted hats with Robin feathers on the side. The blue and white polka dot peplum blouse from Everly when not worn with the ensemble looks great over jeans or a tulle skirt. The navy Ann Taylor blazer is a great work staple or looks great with t-shirts and jeans and worked well over this top. The limited edition parrot umbrella from Disney and jewelry accessories from the Loft finish the look.

The authentic vintage red polka dot gloves and carpet bag purse are from Poshmark!

Black & White Chic

White House Black Market is s great resource for Petites. I love this fitted white and black checked blazer and blouse to capture Emily Blunt’s tailored polished coats as Mary Poppins.

The sleek high-waisted Joni pants from Topshop modernizes the look with a millennial appeal. The vintage white gloves came from Poshmark and was sold together with the mesh polka dot gloves worn in look one. Many vintage gloves do fit smaller hands so they are great for petite fashion finders.

One of my favorite sequences in the film is with Jack, leeries and Mary and Big Ben. So when I saw this clock it reminded me of the yellow light of Big Ben and the film.

I had fun creating this look drawing from the independence of Jane Banks played by Emily Mortimer. Jane is seen often throughout the movie with a beret and with the colors of green, brown and yellow.

I incorporated some of Mary Poppins whimsy and fashion sense with a trumpet skirt and a tie blouse with flutter sleeves to give a nod to how her coat drapes. To finish off the look I paired it with a kite necklace and a green parrot umbrella.

This look was created from items I got at a great fashion find price through Poshmark and Amazon with items already in my closet. I love creating memorable looks by making offers for items that are no longer sold in stores.  One of my favorite pieces to complete this look was the carpet bag clutch that is vintage in excellent condition.
