One of the bright spots in Hollywood on Melrose is M Cafe. What makes it a standout for me is the delicious healthy food that is fully embodied in flavor. On their extensive menu they have a variety of macrobiotic vegetarian choices that are gluten free with a nod to my Japanese American heritage. The gluten free teriyaki sauce is made from scratch – not the gooey standard mystery sauce you expect these days from restaurants. The gluten free miso soup is flavorful, silky and authentic. The minimalist casual environment with bright yellow chairs is friendly and welcoming. There is outdoor covered seating in front.
This is a great place to gather with friends, on a date or by yourself. For those that are in a hurry they have a case stocked daily with fresh maki sushi rolls prepared with organic rice from Koda farms, salads and meals on the go. You can scan the items yourself to pay with a credit card. There is also a computer monitor where you can place your order exactly how you want it.
For those who have time to leisurely savor their food there is someone to place your order at the counter. Food is delivered to you at your table. You will be pleasantly surprised to see the steam arising from beautifully presented food. Not only is the food healthy and delicious it is arranged in such an artistic and inviting manner.
Portions of most entrees are substantial but if you managed to save room for desserts there are a good variety tantalizing you in the case. Many are gluten and dairy free and are also beautiful. Opt to share one with a friend or get one to go.
-Teriyaki rice bowl with salmon and veggies
Salmon was cooked to perfection- wild caught, succulent fresh and flavorful. Vegetables were also perfectly cooked perfectly bright and colorful
heirloom brown rice, seasonal vegetables, kale, red beans, braised hijiki, house-made pickles, pea shoots, carrot-ginger sauce
Unusual and tasty veggies. Very filling
-Sweet potato fries (tasty seasoning)
Chili, sea salt and lime
-Organic miso soup (silky and flavorful)
Tofu, shiitake, wakame and scallion
M Cafe also has a variety of desserts to choose from in their cold case next to the register. Many of the options are gluten free and/or vegan and should be marked on the sign by each dessert. When I visited there the gluten free and vegan options were a brownie, oatmeal walnut chocolate chunk cookie, matcha mochi, chocolate pudding, iced pumpkin bread and blueberry muffin. The pudding, cake and cookie is made at M Cafe and the others are from Erin McKenna’s bakery in Los Angeles. Her treats are refined sugar-free, gluten-free, soy-free and vegan.
The only drawback to M Cafe is the parking. There are only a few spots in front of the restaurant. You will have to fend for parking on the surrounding streets or be prepared to walk. The best time to come is early for breakfast or for an early lunch. However, for most Angelenos this is not a problem such is the way of life in LA. M Cafe is every bit worth the inconvenience of parking. Enjoy!
