I love how the beauty and allure of a mermaid and the sea can be translated from myths and legends to pop culture to fashionable style. I enjoyed putting together different mermaid inspired looks that tell their own story. My first mermaid inspired sea look is based around one of my favorite stories of the Starfish. The starfish story inspires everyone to make a positive difference. This sparkly chiffon starfish dress flows when you walk and is paired nicely with a starfish and faux pearl headband I found on Amazon Prime. My other looks feature mermaid touches of crochet laced circles like bubbles and a white dress with mermaid like bottom.
I also am thrilled to share with you my mermaid kit that I put together from makeup that evokes the life of a mermaid. Tarte has a Rainforest of the Sea Collection and NCLA has mermaid inspired nail polish and cuticle oil.
What do you think of when you envision a mermaid or the sea? Graceful or mysterious?
I would love to know what fashion, makeup, place or art reminds you of a mermaid. Perhaps your look will be legendary.

Nail Polish: NCLA The Last Siren
I usually go with a very natural nail look but enjoyed switching things up by featuring this stunning holographic nail polish by NCLA. I like that it does not have many harmful ingredients that other nail polishes have. The cool holographic color shimmers and glistens in the light. I included my nail polish in my mermaid kit. The mermaid styled look is popular for events and dresses! You can begin to look for your own mermaid inspired style by looking for outfits with asymmetrical hems, trumpet or fluted skirts, high low hems that would flow beautifully behind you, ruffles and sea patterns and colors. Add sparkle with makeup and accessories or look for clothing that catches your eye.
Mermaid Inspired Style
One of the most iconic images of a mermaid comes from Disney’s 1989 animated feature film The Little Mermaid celebrating 30 years. Other mermaids in pop-culture come from Peter Pan, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe etc.
In celebration of The Little Mermaid’s 30th anniversary The Hollywood Bowl and Musical Theatre West are offering two dazzling different kinds of productions. Experience both the film and live special performances at the Hollywood Bowl and then also see Disney’s Broadway musical production by Musical Theatre West. Scroll down for more information.
The Hollywood (Fish) Bowl will be magically transformed in an immersive live to film concert under the sea adventure with state of the art projection mapping technology to project newly created animated “living scenery” for a night of magic. Songs from Disney’s The Little Mermaid will be performed live on stage featuring an all star cast accompanied by orchestra. All of the favorites such as “Under the Sea’, “Kiss the Girl”, and “Part of Your World” will be performed.
One of the highlights of the concert will be special guest Alan Menken who will perform the Oscar/Grammy winning score as the motion picture plays on the Bowl’s movie screen while the orchestra performs live.
Prior to the show there will be fun events such as a Mermaid themed costume contest and photo opportunities.
Dates: Friday, May 17th 8:00 pm & Sat May 18th 8:00 pm
Cast: Leah Michele (Ariel), Leo Gallo (Prince Eric), Harry Fierstein (Ursula), Church Marin (Chef Louis), Ken Page (Sebastian), Peter Gallagher (King Triton), Joshua Turchin (Flounder)
Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.”
I am excited that David Burnham will be playing Prince Eric. He is one of my favorite artists who I have seen in solo concert and shows in southern California. Some of his career highlights include Broadway’s Wicked (Fiyero) and his work on The Light in the Piazza as part of the original Broadway cast and national tour (Fabrizio Naccarelli).
Cast: Katharine McDonough (Ariel), David Burnham (Price Eric), Cynthia Ferrer (Ursula), Jalon Matthews (Sebastian), Marc Cedric Smith (King Triton)
