The Pixar movie Up is celebrating its 10th anniversary! It has been 10 years since the heartwarming and inspiring adventures of seventy-eight year old Carl and boy scout Russell complete with balloons and dreams hit movie theaters on May 29, 2009. You are never too late for an adventure that can start in your own house.
One of the most poignant or touching sequences ever to be in an animated film are the moments with the couple Carl and his wife Ellie. I love the friendship and love the two built over the years which included picnic dates looking up at the clouds with imagination. To celebrate the film I wanted to share with you how you can dress in the style of Ellie, pack an Up inspired picnic and seek adventure!
I love wearing this Dollface mustard yellow gingham print ruffled mini dress by Lush sold exclusively on Lulus. The lightweight woven yellow gingham fabric and the tortoise buttons down the front reminds me of Ellie’s picnic outfit from the movie. I usually wear size xxs or a petite 00 but since only a size xs was available I took up the shoulders and took in the back to fit my petite frame.
I paired it with Urban Outfitter’s Maddie woven Panama hat in the color beige with the faux leather accent strap. The hat is both a fashion accessory and gives some sun protection with the structured crown and flat brim extending around the base.
I am carrying the daytrip lidded basket in size small rectangular from Pottery Barn. The basket is perfect to carry your belongings or some light picnic items for two. After your picnic adventure you can use it in your home as storage or for decoration. Before you carry it make sure that the metal hardware is secure.

Featured Picnic Accessories:
In the film Carl and Ellie label a glass jar “Paradise Falls” for a dream adventure. Incorporate the glass jar into your picnic with this layered picnic in a jar! I love this idea because you can get a delicious meal all in one. Instead of having to prepare and pack many different things you can focus on bringing great flavor layered in a beautiful reusable glass jar. You could also put together a salad in a jar or your favorite dessert in a jar and label it!
This layered picnic in a jar’s recipe includes layers of brown rice, chickpeas, eggplant and shredded cooked chicken.

Level: Easy Yield: 4 Jars
Total: 3 hr 10 min
Prep: 30 min
Inactive: 2 hr 30 min
Cook: 10 min
Special equipment: 4 (1-pint) jam jars
For the rice layer:
2 1/2 cups cooked brown rice
3 tablespoons chopped, pitted green olives
3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the chickpea layer:
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Zest of 1 lemon
1 1/2 cups cooked chickpeas, rinsed and drained
1/4 cup white wine
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For the eggplant layer:
1/2 eggplant, cut into 1-inch cubes
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup grape tomatoes, halved
2 cups shredded cooked chicken, such as leftover rotisserie chicken or about 2 cutlets, cooked and shredded
1. Place the rice in a medium bowl. In a small bowl, whisk together the olives, cilantro, oil, vinegar, and salt, and pepper to make a light vinaigrette. Drizzle the dressing over the rice and toss to coat completely.
2. To make the chickpea layer:
In a large saute pan, heat the olive oil, then add the onions and cook over medium heat until very tender and beginning to brown, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, cayenne, and lemon zest and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the chickpeas and stir to coat. Turn the heat up to high and deglaze the pan with the wine. Remove the pan from the heat, season with salt, and pepper, to taste and set aside.
3. To make the eggplant layer:
Place the eggplant cubes in a colander and salt liberally. Let rest for 20 to 30 minutes and then blot with paper towels. In a large saute pan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat and cook the onions until tender. Add the blotted eggplant. The eggplant will absorb the oil, but only add more if the eggplant is very dry. Cook for 5 minutes on medium heat, turning occasionally. Add the garlic, and lower the heat, adding a little more oil, if necessary. Season the mixture with salt, and pepper, to taste and cook until the eggplant is tender, about 3 or 4 more minutes. Add the tomatoes and cook for a minute to soften just a little and force the juices to release. Turn off the heat. Season with salt, and pepper, and set aside.
4. To assemble the jars:
Layer the ingredients decoratively in 4 jam jars starting first with the rice, followed by chick peas, eggplant, chicken, and topped with another layer of rice. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight to prepare for picnic.
