Experience: An art installation that looks like a giant silver seashell which was inspired by the NASA satellites and created at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This aluminum spiral designed by Studio KCA is about the size of a small apartment. Guests can walk inside to experience hearing various sounds such as the crashing of a wave, a frog croaking, leaves blowing in the wind and a human voice which is haunting and mysterious. Each of these various sounds are linked to one of the 19 NASA satellites that orbit the earth, a group which includes global antenna arrays, the deep space network and the International Space Station. Every time a satellite passes overhead, it triggers its own soundtrack within the spiral. As the satellite moves the sound also moves between the speakers in the walls. Each sound interprets one of the satellite’s missions. The purpose of this innovative art installation is to raise awareness of the many invisible satellites that are constantly zooming through space.
