Tech Savvy

If you are going to invite your mom to more Facetimes, virtual meetings, and hangouts, then you can also gift her some fashionable and affordable blue light blocking glasses! I like how these glasses help minimize eye-strain and are so lightweight. Click on the varying styles to see what you think fits your mom best. Some styles will not arrive before Mother’s Day, so check the prime shipping dates. You might even want to get yourself a pair too so both you and your mom can wear them in your homes while chatting with each other.

Host A Family Tribute Night
Contact family members to celebrate Mom together online with a “Tribute to Mom” night. Wear her favorite color if possible! Ask each person to find favorite photos or videos and think about some of their favorite memories to share. You can use the share screen option on zoom or just hold things up to the camera. Find a personal item from your home that reminds you of mom – a gift she gave you, an object that sparks a memory, a handwritten card, etc. and share why it reminds you of mom and why you chose it.

If a virtual meeting is not possible or if someone is tech-challenged- create a slideshow to play and send or pre-record video/audio messages and have someone edit it.  All they have to do is open and press play.

Zoom offers 40 minutes free. It is not about the length of time but the thought and meaning in choosing to celebrate together!

Breakfast in Bed, Baking Together and Recipe Sharing
Use Zoom to connect with your mom virtually and bake a recipe together. Earlier in the week, set up an instacart or grocery delivery to be sent to her house, so she doesn’t need to do the shopping. While you are waiting for the treats you made to bake, you can sit down and share stories about favorite life moments or play an online game. When the food is ready, take the first bite at the same time as your mom.

You can involve the entire family by jumping on video chat to share what new recipes you are discovering during quarantine or discuss how mom’s cooking is the best.

You can also start a themed food/snack friendly competition challenge on what family member can make something out of certain chosen ingredients ala “Chopped” from the Food Network. Make it as silly, simple, and fun as you like!

Think about sending words of appreciation and love written from the heart!

I am so thankful for the loving-kindness my mom always gives and the example she sets by leading with strength and joy.  I am looking forward to not only celebrating her this weekend but in small moments of each day with a text, phone call, or a picture that reminds us of our blessed relationship. This week is also a time to celebrate all maternal figures, teachers, mentors, etc. May our hearts be bursting with joy and be sensitive to others.
