- Legacy: Tanaka Farms - All in the Family: I had the pleasure of speaking to Farmer Kenny Tanaka, a Yonsei, fourth-generation Japanese American who hopes to pass on the family farm business to his children one day. The Tanaka family lead by Glenn and Shirley Tanaka have been farmers from the first generation and are celebrating 25 years at University Drive in Irvine, 47 years in the Irvine area, and 83 years as Tanaka Farms. Kenny grew up on a farm, but it wasn't until after college that he began to implement his ideas on how to continue to grow the business of agrotourism. The joy of developing agritourism at Tanaka Farms is evident in Kenny's smile and storytelling. One of his fondest memories revolves around children who discover the joy of seeing where and how vegetables are grown at the farm for the first time. He remembers one little boy in particular who ate a whole stalk of green onion to the surprise of his mother. The popularity of the tours has skyrocketed to thousands of visitors coming not only locally but around the United States. Kenny's favorite farm tour is during strawberry season. It is an epic sight to see acres and rows of strawberries. The farm produces the sweetest, juiciest strawberries because they are picked ripe off the vine.
- Strawberry Picking: is a fun and enjoyable activity that many people look forward to during the spring and summer months! Experience a strawberry picking tour (about a 1-hour experience) at Tanaka Farms in Irvine, CA. Not only is it a great way to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, but it's also a chance to connect with nature! Here are some tips for making the most out of your strawberry-picking experience: Dress appropriately: Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. Wear a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun. Follow the rules: Be sure to follow any rules or guidelines set by Tanaka Farms and your tour guide, such as where to pick the strawberries and picking only strawberries that fit in your container with a closed lid. Keep your limbs inside the wagon at all times. Your guide will let you know how you can pick the strawberries by using your finger pressure and hand. You do not need to buy scissors. Pick the right berries: Look for strawberries that are firm and fully red, with no signs of mold or damage. Be careful not to pick unripe (greenish or white color) or overripe berries, as they may not taste as good. Have fun: Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the experience! Take in the sights of the farm, and savor the taste of the sweet, juicy strawberries that you pick. Be Flexible: Tanaka Farms constantly evaluates the fields to see what is ripe and ready. There is a possibility that due to recent weather, there will be a change in your tour. You may get to pick other seasonal vegetables instead! It has been raining a lot here in CA which has an effect on the strawberries!
